Turtles can drown if they are not able to surface to the water to breathe. Drowning occurs when water enters the lungs, which would happen if a turtle is trapped underwater, struggling for air. Even species like the Fitzroy river turtle that have developed means of breathing underwater can still drown as their adaptations are not the sole method of oxygen retrieval. Sea turtles often drown when they get caught in fishing nets.
