Both the Long-Finned Pilot Whale and the Short-Finned Pilot Whale were given their names based on the unproven theory that a single individual led the pod of fellow whales. Though both species are social (they can often be found in pods of 10-50 individuals), neither species is known to have an individual “pilot” the rest through the water.
