Excerpt from All About Sharks: A Complete Guide to the World’s Most Misunderstood Predator (Nov. 2017):

In Japanese folklore, a Tengu is a magical, goblin-like warrior that can change shapes and move instantly from place to place while seeking out arrogant Shinto or Buddhist monks to torment.
This mischievous deity hates arrogance and pursues any priests who seek any fame or favor for their knowledge.
The most common form of the Tengu is a demon with a Pinocchio-like beak or nose. Consequently, the goblin shark, with its distinctive rostrum that extends far beyond its jaw, is called a tenguzame in Japan.
