Great white sharks are the largest shark known to “spy hop” or raise their head above the waterline in order to get a better view of the nearby environment.

Many whales are known for this behavior, which allows them to gain perspective both to avoid predators and pursue prey. Only great whites are known to do this among the larger sharks.
