The three “monk” seals are either extinct – Caribbean Monk Seal (Monachus tropicalis) – or are the most endangered of seals – Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) and Hawaiian Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi). The scientific name Monachus is taken from the Greek word “monachus” which means “solitary” or “monk-like.” Each of these seals is known to be very private, preferring hidden harbors or coves away from people. Some people believe that the term “monk” is also due to the folds of skin on the head and neck of the seals, which some people think look like the robes monks traditionally wear.
