What biotoxin does turtle meat carry?

A 2013 medical study revealed that eating turtle meat – especially sea turtles – can be very risky to your health. Chelonitoxin is a poison in turtle meat that can cause vomiting, pain, and flu-like symptoms. If untreated, it can lead to coma. Raw meat is always a bad idea, but even when it comes to eating turtles the study found that “cooking may offer little to no protection.” Sea turtles are especially likely to carry the biotoxin because so much of the food they consume is already poisoned.
