The term “blackfish” is a general reference phrase referring to one of several species of cetaceans or fish. Due to the popularity of the book and documentary “Blackfish” the term has been most closely associated with the Killer Whale in recent years, but the Melon-headed Whale, Pygmy Killer Whale, False Killer Whale, Long-finned Pilot Whale, and Short-Finned Pilot Whale are also considered to be “blackfish” too.

There are several fish that are considered “blackfish” too including: the Alaskan blackfish, Sacramento blackfish, and Tautog.

Fishermen need to be careful fishing for Tautog because the blackfish is known for its set of teeth.
