What is a Lateral Line?

The lateral line is a series of pores along the sides of fish that connect the water outside the body to a channel that runs beneath its skin. The pores are filled with a gel-like substance and millions of sensory cilia attached to nerve endings that transmit the sensory data directly to the brain.
