What is the difference between hibernation, aestivation, and brumation?
Though they are similar and often confused with each other, there are clear differences between these three behaviors that animals exhibit to rest:
- Hibernation and brumation both happen in winter, but aestivation only happens in hot conditions like summer.
- Mammals hibernate. Turtles and reptiles brumate. Both aestivate.
- During hibernation, mammals sleep so deeply they do not drink water.
- Turtles and reptiles need to drink water during brumation (winter) or aestivation (summer), making both more of a long nap or rest instead of deep sleep.
