What is R Selection?

One of two reproduction strategies for species, compared to its opposite K Selection. An R Selection species often lives in an unpredictable environment filled with many predators, consequently females will give birth to many offspring, knowing that only a small percentage of them will make it to adulthood. Whale sharks, who give birth to hundreds of pup at a time, are an example of an R Selection animal.
