Why is the yellow-margined box turtle’s defense weird?

The turtle with the best defense just may be the yellow-margined box turtle which is able to “wall out” predators by pinching together the edges of the plastron and carapace after he withdraws his head. The result is a rock-shaped shell that is difficult for predators to penetrate.
