Each of the 22 species of beaked whale are notorious for being mysterious, avoiding contact with humans, but three of them have never been seen live. The Andrew’s Beaked Whale, Longman’s Beaked Whale and Ginkgo-Toothed Beaked Whale have only been identified from dead individuals who have washed ashore and none of the three have ever been photographed for filmed.

The Andrew’s beaked whale has had 35 individuals who have washed ashore. The Longman’s Beaked Whale was only identified from two skulls that washed ashore. The Ginkgo-toothed beaked whale has only been identified from a handful of stranded and dead individuals.

A fourth member of the beaked whale group, the Shepherd’s Beaked Whale, was recorded for the first time in 2012.
