In 2006 the longest pet-owner relationship in history came to an end in Kolkata, India, after Adwaita, a 256-year-old Aldabra giant tortoise died due to complications from a crack in his shell. Adwaita (translated as “one and only” in Sanskrit) was a gift to Lord Robert Clive, an official in the East India Company who died 232 years earlier in 1774.
