What vulnerable marine mammal is related to elephants?

All four species in the Order Sirenia are distant relatives of the elephant: Amazonian manatee, dugong, West African manatee and West Indian manatee. Though each of these species has been called at times a “sea cow” the more accurate nickname would be the “sea elephant” because these four species once walked on land and had limbs that evolved into flippers. In fact, both the West African and West Indian manatees have three or four fingernails on each flipper, the same number elephants have on their feet.
