As the only member of the whale family with no dorsal fin, the Northern Right Whale Dolphin is the most easily-recognizable of all cetaceans. That is, once you realize it is a dolphin. Due to its unusual appearance, many first-time observers often confuse the Northern Right Whale Dolphin with other animals like seals or sea lions. The animal’s scientific name – Lissodelphis borealis – reflects its unusual appearance: lisso is Greek for “smooth” and borealis is Latin for “northern.”
