The popular television show “Flipper” (1964-67) made the Bottlenose Dolphin one of the world’s most popular cetacean, but the show never portrayed one of the ways the dolphin hunts its prey: “fish whacking.”

Bottlenose Dolphin will strike fish with their flukes (tail) so hard that it knocks the fish completely out of the water. Momentarily stunned and disoriented both from the blunt force and flipping out of the water, the fish becomes easy for the dolphin to eat when it lands back in the water.
