One of the elusive beaked whales, the Sowerby’s beaked whale is named for James Sowerby (1757-1822), an artist primarily known for his botany work. However, Sowerby was a wide-ranging naturalist and became interested in the cetacean species after one became stranded on the beach in Moray Firth, Scotland, in 1800. It wasn’t until 1804 that Sowerby shared his description of the animal publicly, but when he did it was the first beaked whale to be described for the world and was named after him.
