Found only in the Arctic Ocean and nearby waters, the Narwhal (Monodon monoceros) lives beneath the ice, surfacing between cracks to breathe. Individuals have been found frozen to death in ice that formed so quickly the individual was trapped in a pocket of water that gradually froze, trapping and killing the “unicorn of the sea” in a block of ice.
