International Whale Shark Day

August 30, 2016

The largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark can reach lengths of 40 feet (12 meters) and feeds on some of the smallest animals in the aquatic kingdom. Like the world’s second largest fish, the basking shark, whale sharks are filter feeders. With a flattened head and blunt snout, the whale shark opens its mouth and allows water to flow into its out and out through its gills, filtering out their favorite food, plankton. The average weight for a whale shark is 20 tons.
